Oakwood Friends School is New York State's oldest co-educational boarding and day school. It is an independent, college preparatory school serving grades 6-12. Devoted since its inception to the fundamental Quaker belief that "there is that of God in every person," Oakwood Friends puts this belief into practice by focusing on the individual learner, and cultivating a diversified community of students and staff in an atmosphere of mutual respect and enrichment.
The arts play an integral role in students' education at Oakwood. Every freshman is required to take one-term introductory courses in art, music, and drama. Students are also encouraged to choose from a rich variety of electives in the arts. Popular courses include: ceramics, animation, painting and drawing, photography, music composition and songwriting, beginning guitar, music of the twentieth century, theater tech., and improvisation. Students also have the opportunity to perform in concerts, open-mic events, special events, and drama productions.
